The magnetic force appears to be concentrated at or near the ends of the magnet. These areas are called the magnetic poles.
The pole of a suspended magnet which points towards the north, is called the 'north seeking pole (north pole)', the other pole is called the 'south seeking pole (south pole)'.
Magnetic poles always exist in pairs. It is not possible to produce just an isolated north pole or isolated south pole. If a bar magnet is broken into two, each piece will have a north and south pole.
